PREPARE THE WAY | The Bowed Life: The Power of Submission

“He must increase, but I must decrease.”
John 3:30
Devotional Thought
Submission is not weakness. It is strength surrendered to God. John the Baptist understood that his life was never about building his own platform, protecting his own spotlight, or holding onto a season longer than God intended. His posture was clear: Jesus must increase.
We often want clarity for our calling, but clarity comes easier when our hearts are bowed before God. A submitted life helps us see what God is asking of us because we are no longer fighting for our own way. Submission also requires humility. We cannot follow Jesus deeply while remaining full of ourselves. Humility makes room for obedience.
There are also moments when submission means stepping back. That can be hard. Sometimes God changes the season, shifts our role, or asks us to release what once felt central. A bowed life trusts that obedience matters more than prominence. Even when it costs us comfort, recognition, or control, submission keeps us steady because our confidence is in God, not in our position.
The power of submission is that it keeps our lives aligned with Jesus. When we decrease, Christ is seen more clearly in us.
Reflection Questions
What area of my life am I struggling to fully surrender to God right now?
Am I resisting a shift in my season because I want to hold onto comfort, control, or recognition?
What would it look like this week for Jesus to increase in my attitude, decisions, and relationships?
Prayer
Lord, teach us to live a bowed life. Help us to walk in true humility and to surrender every part of our hearts to You. Open our eyes so we can clearly see what You have called us to do. Give us grace to step back when You shift the season, and give us courage to stand firm when obedience costs us something. Let Jesus increase in our lives, and let our lives point clearly to Him. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge to Obey
This week, choose one area where you have been holding on tightly and intentionally surrender it to God in prayer. Then take one practical step of obedience that shows Jesus is increasing and you are decreasing.
