" In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near!’ … ‘Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance… And don’t presume to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.’”
Matthew 3:1-2, 8-9 CSB
DEVOTIONAL
John the Baptist’s message reminds us that preparation for Jesus is not external; it is internal. While we often focus on getting things right on the outside, God is after our hearts.
Repentance is central because it is how we realign our lives with God. It is not just about recognizing sin, but turning from it and moving toward Him. Scripture shows us that this response is not optional or occasional. It is urgent, ongoing, and necessary for every believer.
We are also reminded that repentance must be genuine. It is easy to settle for appearances, activity, or good intentions. But real repentance produces visible change. When our thinking is transformed, our direction follows.
At the same time, repentance is deeply personal. No background, habit, or spiritual activity can replace a surrendered heart before God. Each of us must respond individually.
The invitation is clear. God is not calling us to perfection, but to surrender. And as we respond through acknowledging, apologizing, and adjusting, our hearts are prepared for what He wants to do in and through us.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. What area of our lives is God asking us to stop delaying and repent today?
2. Is our repentance producing real change or just temporary feelings?
3. What is one practical adjustment we need to make to align our lives with God’s will?
PRAYER
Lord,
Thank You for Your kindness that leads us to repentance. We confess the areas where we have delayed, justified, or ignored what You are calling us to change. Today we acknowledge our sin, we turn back to You, and we choose to adjust our lives to Your ways. Renew our thinking and give us the courage to walk in obedience. Prepare our hearts for what You want to do next.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
CHALLENGE
Take time today to practice the three A’s.
Acknowledge one specific sin before God.
Apologize with genuine repentance, not just words.
Adjust by taking one clear step that reflects change.
If needed, have a conversation with someone you have wronged.
Do not wait. A prepared heart responds now.
