Main Scripture
"Then Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. But John tried to talk him out of it. 'I am the one who needs to be baptized by you,' he said, 'so why are you coming to me?' But Jesus said, 'It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.' So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.'"
Supporting Scriptures: Luke 2:41 | Luke 2:52 | Matthew 3:13 | Matthew 3:16 | Matthew 3:17
Devotional
There is a moment in Jesus' life that does not get enough attention. Before the miracles, before the crowds, before the cross, Jesus shows up at the Jordan River to be baptized. And in that moment, you see what a spiritually grown up person actually looks like.
Jesus knew what time it was. He did not wait for someone to push Him into purpose. He initiated. He showed up. He understood that there are seasons in life that require you to step forward, even when others question the move. John tried to talk Him out of it, but Jesus was not confused about the moment He was standing in. A grown up does not drift into their next season. They discern it and move with intention.
Jesus also knew He needed the Holy Spirit. He was the Son of God, and yet He did not bypass the filling. He came up out of the water and the Spirit descended on Him. This is not a small detail. It is a reminder that spiritual maturity is not about having it all together on your own. It is about positioning yourself to receive what only God can give. A grown up does not outgrow their need for the Holy Spirit. They lean into it more.
And then the Father speaks. "This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy." Jesus had not yet preached a sermon. He had not yet performed a miracle. The affirmation came before the assignment. A grown up knows who they are before the world decides for them. Identity does not come from performance. It comes from the Father.
Reflect
Is there a next step you have been waiting for permission to take, when God has already made the path clear?
In what areas of your life are you trying to operate in your own strength instead of leaning on the Holy Spirit?
How much of your sense of identity is shaped by what you do rather than who God says you are?
Prayer
Father, I want to be someone who knows what time it is. Give me the courage to step into the moments You have prepared for me without hesitation or delay. Teach me to rely on Your Spirit and not just my own understanding. And remind me today that before I accomplish anything, You already call me Yours. That is enough. In Jesus' name, amen.
Walk It Out
"May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14
Know Your Season: Take ten minutes this week to ask God what season you are currently in and what He is calling you to step into. Write it down.
Lean on the Spirit: Identify one area where you have been operating in your own strength. Pray specifically over that area and invite the Holy Spirit to take the lead.
Anchor Your Identity: Find one scripture this week that speaks to who God says you are. Write it somewhere you will see it every day and speak it out loud.
